Guitar Picks
JOHN PEARSE
"Tortoise Shell has been the "Holy Grail" of guitar picks for as long as I can remember...and, for a considerably shorter time than that [we won't get picky] we have been trying to make picks which are legal and non-lethal to life forms, and which get the same sound.

John's wonderful Studio Picks taught people that a pick could be redesigned...and has 3 different picking points, each of which gets a different sound! So, after using Casein [a resin made from Milk and Phosphoric Acid] for our Faux Tortoise Shell Pins, it wasn't much of a stretch of the imagination to think about doing the Studio™ Picks in Casein.

Pens
Parker
"One of the strangest materials that pens have been made from is a material called Ivorine, a sort of protein based plastic that was developed in the late 1800's in an effort to replace the black board slates used in schools. The first white boards, in fact. According to David Wells, a pen collector that has done extensive research, Adolf Spitteler and W. Kirsch in Bavaria developed the process of making plastics from formaldehyde and... well... skimmed milk."

Filler
Casein Filler
"Earthborn Casein Filler has a smaller carbon footprint than most fillers. It is based on the natural milk protein casein and white lime. Less energy is used to make it because it is titanium dioxide free.

But there is no loss of performance. Earthborn Casein Filler has excellent adhesive qualities, making it easier to fill cracks and holes in plaster and other surfaces. Once applied, it remains flexible and lasts exceptionally well.

Leather Polish
Casein Polished Finish
"The aim of this type of finish is to produce leather, which retains its "natural" look but at the same time achieves a degree of uniformity in color with the minimum opacity necessary. This is achieved by using a mixture of aniline dyestuffs and pigmented dyestuffs bound together using casein. Pigments, unlike dyestuffs are insoluble in water or solvents and are opaque. Casein, a protein that comes from milk exists as a water-soluble colloid. It is not unlike albumen (known in the bookbinding world as 'glaire'), which is the protein present in egg white."

The Plasic Historical Society
Casein (article) Casein plastics were introduced at the beginning of the 20th century, their starting material being the protein in cows milk, precipitated by the action of the enzyme rennin.

Although casein is readily moulded to shape under moderate heat and pressure, it does not produce a stable material for manufacture until it has become hardened by soaking in formalin (5% solution of formaldehyde in water) for a long period. Unfortunately, this causes much distortion so casein plastics are almost always produced by machining stock material such as sheet, rod, tube or buttton blanks (small discs). After machining, casein may be polished either mechanically with abrasives or chemically with a 'dip polish'.

Note Plasic can also be made from oher milks such as human milk

"CASEIN plastics were first manufactured in 1899. CASEIN plastics are a biopolymer plastic. Modern day polymers are petroleum based. CASEIN plastics are made from a natural organic protein polymer (skimmed milk) that is not toxic to produce. It is chemically synthesized with a mild solution of formaldehyde as a hardener."

Jewelery Products that Contain Milk

Fake Amber
Fake Amber
When it comes to glass it is much more solid, cold and you wouldn't be able to scratch it with a metal. Celluloid is quite similar to Amber optically; however it is more solid and diffuses burnt plastic when heated. Fenolic resin is very similar to Amber beads in shape and color so the easiest way to distinguish them is through smell. Casein is a form of plastic made from milk those beads are usually in turbid yellow color. It is easy to differentiate Casein from Amber since it is heavier and it diffuse plastic smell when heated.

Galalith
Galalith is Not French Bakelite (artilce)
In the early 1900’s, notable French and German jewelry makers such as Coco Channel and Jakob Bengel began using the material in the production of jewelry, with its widest use in the 1920’s and 30’s. Restrictions on milk use during WWII slowed, and then eliminated, the production of Galalith and once replaced by other modern plastic materials, which could be cast and heat-molded, Galalith never regained its former popularity.
